Otakon Pics by B

This gallery is mostly Cosplay pics. I’m not like an authority on cosplaying or anything, but these are just some I thought were interesting. I had intended to take pictures of everything, but in the dealers room I was too busy looking for stuff to buy. For those of you who have not seen the dealers room at a large convention, it is an epic sight to behold. For this year this is all I have.

Nana & Hachi

We were going out to get something to eat and I saw this girl smoking a cigarette and I thought to myself “she’s so punk fucking rock.” and I had a feeling like I saw a famous person. Then I saw her friend and I realized they were cosplaying as Nana and Hachi from Nana. I think it’s my personal favorite of the convention because I didn’t think “cosplayers” first I thought “wow that’s Nana and Hachi!” and I was totally stoked.

Revy & Balalaika Mario & Princess Peach

There were a few Revys at this year’s Otakon, but this was the only Revy to go all out. The Balalaika is super legit too. We were walking back to the parking deck and I think the Revy thought I was just some random dude trying to take pics of girls in skimpy outfits, but then I asked Balalaika to be in the picture too by name and Revy said “ah Black Lagoon fan.” Black Lagoon fan indeed. Awesome costume, way to go all out.

The Mario and Princess Peach were the first cosplayers I took pictures of going into the convention. I would have to say it’s the cutest thing I saw at the convetion or umm… ever. That mustache is awesome.

unknown Green Ranger & White Ranger

Someone Tell me what the picture on the left is because I don’t know and it is awesome.

Green Ranger and White Ranger. White Ranger is a friend of mine. I was supposed to call him and meet up with him at the Con but the Ranger suit had no pockets… so no phone. I ran into him and took some pictures.

Space Marines momo with guard

Awesome Space Marines. That smart gun was really cool. Nice cosplaying.

Momo with a security guard. Everyone loves big buys in costumes.

I had intended to make a big deal out of this post and write about how I rediscovered my love for anime at Otakon, but I don’t think I need to. The pictures do the talking here as usual. I had a good time. Enjoy the gallery. I’ll take more pics next con.

I’m re-submitting this comment b/c rico got on my case for not properly using the comment feature:

“maybe it is unit 00 google street view van”

      • 3

Sorry dude, it looked like you were talking to yourself. XD

Oh, and do you even understand the reference you just made?

        • 4

I bought the Asuka Fräulein didn’t I? Or maybe I was making a reference to XXXG-00W0. OHHHHHHHH, what!?

          • 5

I hope it was XXXG-00W0 you were referring to because Asuka didn’t pilot Unit 00.

            • 6

Asuka was in EVA duh! Owning one piece of EVA merch gives me a license to make a reference to it. Oh wait I forgot about the site rule that says you are the only one who can mention EVA.

              • 7

DUDE. You’re not supposed to tell the Internets about our rules!!!111oneone

I was going to say something about not listening to haters, but then realized that’s exactly how I am with Griffon PVCs, haha.

Oh, and that Revy and Balalaika are awesome!

I totally don’t get why you referenced Eva…

        • 9

You asked if it was the google street view van… I thought that you were joking. I didn’t realize it was an actual question. No it is not. I meant it as “Maybe it is the prototype”. I assumed you would get the prototype reference and that simultaneously Ric-sama would call me out for using an Eva reference that I do not fully understand. Ric-sama is a huge Eva fan as I’m sure you know. I’m not and I wanted to provoke a reaction from him by using one. You’ve been around the site quite a bit. Nice to meet you Aka.

Oh duh, prototype ref…. I totally didn’t get it.

Also, didn’t think it was really the google van, it was totally a joke.

I’m not sure if you were around when he was still posting, but balalaika_ism is the other founding member of the site (he came up with the name, in fact). He left to pursue other, non-otaku interests (the fool) but has come back into the fold.

He also doesn’t like Eva, so that makes him my rival. :D

Anyway, trying to get this back on topic, I’m making it a goal of mine to become totally ripped next year so I can go shirtless at the con. Cosplay will be optional.

          • 13

I don’t see how your quest to get totally ripped is back on the topic. Since we are sharing goals, mine is to be able to sing exactly like Hyde and blow everyone away if there is any karaoke anywhere.

I don’t like Eva either ^_^. But yeah there is Karaoke there =). At Ota-cafe I believe at the top floor at the game room side.

What’s with all the Eva hate? I think it’s a terribly overrated series. But I don’t think it’s a bad series. I believe it was the first anime I watched with the intention of watching anime. I’d watched anime before without knowledge of anime though.

To answer your question, blalaika_ism, that’s Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastien Michaelis from Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler). It’s a pretty cool series.

Lots of great cosplayers there! I agree with you on the Nana and Hachi; they look great! It’s a true testament to great cosplay when they look so natural that unless you’re in the know you can’t tell they’re in costume. I also like the Black Lagoon and Power Rangers cosplayers.

    • 17

Ah thanks Titan_X, I’ll have to check out that series sometime.

yeah they were, I also like the Nana and Hachi. I didn’t even realize they were cosplaying until you told me on the way to lunch.

I also have to say. This otakon really did just like reignite my passion too…or maybe just threw fuel into the fire and turned it into an inferno. The following Tuesday I bought like 3 anime DVDs that were released when I normally just pick up like one from a show I liked. Of course I’ve already seen the shows that I bought but owning it just makes me feel that much better.

Lol hate is such a strong word..I just don’t like it haha. It was one of the first anime I watched as well but eh…maybe it’s the hype that kills it. Come to think of it..I don’t really hate any anime. o.o

I hate a few anime. Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Groove Adventure Rave/Rave Master, probably others. Reason being, the amount of time wasted and them never getting any good. The only one I finished was Groove Adventure Rave. DBZ and Naruto I watched because of friends, they kept saying it gets better, and they never did. I eventually gave up on them, but only after wasting way too much time.

Yah, I don’t really hate any anime. Eva was also the first anime I watched with the intention of watching anime. I told my friends I saw Akira on Sci Fi channel one saturday morning and one of them forced an Eva box on me. The weird thing is I don’t remember most of the series and by most I mean probably 90%. I don’t dislike or like it, I just don’t remember it. I will watch it again one day. I just think it’s interesting how Ric loves Eva and says it is life changing in an anime viewing sense.

Eva just happened at a time where it really synced with me. Starting in high-school and all those weird issues with puberty and growing up I empathized somewhat with Shinji. And (as corny as it was) the point where he realizes he has worth beyond piloting Eva really touched me. Seeing Shinji realize he had worth made me think I had worth too.

Like I said it happened at the right time. I doubt it would be that meaningful to me if I was watching it for the first time today. As I grew, I began to appreciate the show’s mysteries, philosophies, and other meanings but, at the end of the day, that “I have worth” message still sticks with me the most. Very corny, I know. :P

I want to say that I do hate some anime, but I really don’t. I try to find enjoyment in everything I watch. Even Noir. I do hate the fans shows sometimes produce. Narutards are the first that come to mind, but Evatards can be just as bad, if not worse. ;)
