Kotobukiya (provisionally) wins this day

Figure makers were out in full force this week with Kotobukiya in particular representing the industry.  Not only did they put out announcements for plethora of pleasing PVCs, but they also officially announced one of the greatest figures in recent memory that I’ve seen from them.  Of course, with Kotobukiya, it’s their game to lose.

Kotobukiya (provisionally) wins this day

Minato Nagase – Swimsuit Ver.

Minato NagaseSeries: Akaneiro ni Somaru Saka
Company: GA Graphic//Kotobukiya
Sculptor: Takaku & Takeshi
Scale: Non
Release: Mar 2010
Price: Currently UNK
Notes: Exclusive; Feng Pastel Fun Box Bundle

The Short:
Kotobukiya and GA Graphic are set to release this amazing Minato Nagase figure next March.  She has some great eyes – both sets.   :3

The Long:
Another good looking swimsuit exclusive from Kotobukiya.  I’m really digging Minato’s coloring (which Kotobukiya tends to do really well with their exclusives) and her pose is quite phenomenal (I love her bum).  She’s a little light on detailing in her hair, but the way it flows makes up for that a bit.  Minato’s got a very cute face too.

Minato comes as part of the Feng Pastel Fun Box Bundle.  Fun? Seriously?  Anyway, apparently this fun box is supposed to come with a mouse pad, poster, and a fanbook.  All those extras are pretty much worthless in my mind (though if the fanbook is really an artbook then it’s a different story) and only drive up an exclusive figures already inflated price tag.  Since we’re not being told that price, it really remains to be seen how much fun will be had.

I really want her though.  :(

Rico’s Verdict:
Let’s see the price tag first.

Kagura

KaguraSeries: Azumanga Daioh
Company: Kotobukiya
Sculptor: Mirano
Scale: 1/7
Release: Apr 2010
Price: 67 USD // 6,090 Yen

The Short:
The next up in Kotobukiya’s “Legend Girls” line is another blast from animes past: Kagura from Azumanga Daioh.

The Long:
I’m going out on a limb here and guessing that Kotobukiya has got three, maybe four, more of these Azumanga Daioh figures planned.  ;) Kagura is a personal favorite of mine so I’m ecstatic she’s getting a figure.  To date she’s got the most interesting pose and I love the fact they remembered to put her signature tan-lines in.  As far as accuracy goes, she’s a little less on model than Osaka but far better than Sakaki-san.

Oddly enough Kagura’s sculptor, Mirano, is the same genius behind Alter’s Jubei Yagyu.  I hate to be honest here but that really came as a little bit of a shock to me.  Mirano is a very talented sculptor don’t get me wrong but Kagura is definitely missing a lot of the detail in his other works.  A lot of that can be explained away due to Kagura’s relatively simple design, and I think her pose makes up for the lack of detail a bit, but it was still eye-opening.  Guess sculptors can very from product to product, and company to company.

Will that stop me from buying her?  HAHA.  No.

Rico’s Verdict:
Azumanga fan for life!  Will be pre-ordered.

Misaki Yamamoto – Summer again ver.

Misaki YamamotoSeries: Hatsukoi Limited
Company: Milestone
Sculptor: Mamecchi
Scale: 1/8
Release: Mar 2010
Price: 86 USD // 7,800 Yen

The Short:
Not knowing anything about Hatsukoi Limited I was surprised at how much I liked Misaki.  But Milestone?

The Long:
I thought by this point I would’ve heard of every company making PVCs in existence but I have never heard of this group before.  Apparently they’ve been around for a number of years but have a fairly limited catalog.  Some of their stuff looks interesting but they’re a complete unknown to me at this point.

That’s a long way to say I like what I see but I’m unsure how the final product will be.  So the lack of shading in the paint job bothers me.  But at the same time I think Misaki looks quite good in both her swimsuit and her school uniform.  The amount of detail that’s in her uniform given it also needs to cast-off is quite impressive as well.  And being totally honest the whole going shoe-less with her uniform totally works for me.

Still, quite a price tag for an unknown.

Rico’s Verdict:
Tempting, but am unsure of Milestones quality.

Nendoroid Tsumugi Kotobuki

Tsumugi KotobukiSeries: K-On!
Company: Good Smile Company
Sculptor: Endo Kazuyoshi/Nendoron
Scale: Non
Release: Apr 2010
Price: 39 USD // 3,500 Yen

The Short:
Rounding out the original cast GSC will be releasing eyebrows Nendoroid Tsumugi next spring.

The Long:
I don’t have a lot to say about Tsumugi: she’s cute, she has a keyboard, and she has a big head like all the other Nendoroids.  There’s very little to judge her by but I can’t resist Nendoroids.  I know I’m weak.

Rico’s Verdict:
Pre-ordered.

Sekai Saionji

Sekai SaionjiSeries: School Days
Company: Kotobukiya
Sculptor: Hirotoshi Nakamura
Scale: 1/8
Release: Mar 2010
Price: 79 USD // 7,140 Yen

The Short:
Kotobukiya is set to release another figure from the ultra-bright, cheery, and happy anime School Days.

The Long:
I kind of don’t like this figure, lol.  I have a habit of doing that recently – including figures I don’t like.  :P In Sekai’s case I wanted to like her because I really dig the School Days character designs but the execution just wasn’t there in the end.  I think Kotobukiya did an alright job in coloring and the pose is alright, but the sculpting in her face and hair is pretty bad.  Kotonoha was a lot better, cheaper, and included swappable heads.

The one thing I’ll say for the figure is that I like how subtle it is in showcasing Sekai’s character.  Sekai looks to be a playful type of character (an assumption of mine since I haven’t seen School Days), but that playfulness doesn’t come from a bubbly smile and arms/legs flailing about.  Instead small moves – like the way she tilts her head, bends her legs, and hold her cell phone – tell the story.  Actually it makes her look mischievous instead of playful, but I still think it works.

Rico’s Verdict:
Pass (unless I end up getting Kotonoha, then I might complete the set).

Elwing – Goddess of Forest ver.

ElwingSeries: Shining Wind
Company: Kotobukiya
Sculptor: Matsumoto Koei
Scale: 1/6
Release: Apr 2010
Price: 97 USD // 8,800 Yen

The Short:
Kotobukiya wins for this figure.  Pure and simple.  Unless…

The Long:
Elwing is from Shinning Wind which, in the later part of the series, saw character designs from fan favorite Tony Taka.  In particular Elwing is derived from this image, which leads me to hope that Kotobukiya has an equally awesome Xecty Ein in store for the future.  :3

Elwing takes the cake as the most awesome figure Kotobukiya has put forth to date; far surpassing anything I can recall that hasn’t been released.  Everything looks top notch on Elwing: fantastic coloring, dynamic pose, and an engaging face.  Oh wow do I love her outfit!  :3  Hirotoshi Nakamura does an absolutely amazing job bringing Tony Taka’s artwork to life.  I never thought we’d see someone else come so close the Chieri’s work in that regard.  Of course I suspect (as I construct a fabrication to believe in rather than face the truth) that “Matsumoto Koei” is just a new pseudonym for Chieri!

All that said there is a pretty big “but” in the equation: Kotobukiya itself.  Detailing and pose will end up as nice as we see here, of that I have no doubt.  But what about the coloring?  With the warmth and the shading we see in this prototype be reflective of the final product or will Kotobukiya yet again disappoint with cold, muddied colors?  It’s a gamble.

I, for one, will take the gamble.  :D

Rico’s Verdict:
Oh so bought.  Pre-ordered.

Figures Rico is too lazy to talk about but likes anyway

I liked this section so much last week that I’ll try it for a bit longer.  Here are more figures I like but really don’t have much to say about them:

    .

“Why put Nendoroid Tsumugi in the main post then, Rico?” I can hear you asking.  It’s because love for Nendoroids must never be hidden!  And by that I mean I’m weak.  :P

I absolutely love this goddess version of Elwing! I’m really hoping they come out with a matching Xecty figure. She is my favorite Shining Wind girl. ^^ I was a bit hesitant to order Elwing for the same reasons you’ve stated. But Kotobukiya makes decent 1/6 figures so there is a good chance she turn out fine. And I’ve noticed Kotobukiya does better Shining Wind figures than lets say Orchid Seed.

Just check out their new Seena Kanon figure. She didn’t turn out as nice as the prototype IMO. http://www.moeyo.com/2009/12/figure_orchidseed_shining_seena.html

    Kotobukiya’s latest Clalaclan Maid and Celestia figure turned out great though. I think people should have more faith in Kotobukiya is all I’m saying. ^^;

    • 2

That’s a good point about Kotobukiya doing good at the 1/6 scale. Their 1/6 Yoko turned out quite nice.

I don’t think Seena looks that bad, actually. I think most of the issues are due to poor lighting (BTW, she’s a cast off? I didn’t know that, LOL). Sculpting looks fine.

Hmmm. I’m still in “wait and see” mode with Kotobukiya, but I hope the recent figures you’ve mentioned are indicative of an upward trend for them.

EDIT: Kotobukiya may do well at 1/6, but 1/5 can be a disaster. Now that I’m back in my room I remember I have Kotobukiya’s 1/5 Chizuru and that one ended up being pretty bad coloring wise.

I guess I expected too much from Orchid Seed. I’ve never been picky about this sort of thing but after seeing so many great figures by Alter, GSC, Max Factory, and Koto this year I’ve started to take notice.

I really fell in love with the prototype and was looking forward to owning Seena. I mean I don’t think she looks bad but she could have looked a lot better. Maybe you can post a review if you’re planning to get her. :3

Oh and I love Koto’s 1/6 Yoko! Her smile is contagious. XD

I’ve got her on order, not sure if Rico does. Definitely will post up a review whenever she arrives. But I’m curious, what’s wrong with her in your opinion? I thought she looked quite good, and can’t really see any problems between prototype and release. Perhaps her hair is more pronounced in it’s colour? But otherwise I can’t really put a finger on it. Foo-bar-baz and Azure Toy-Box both give it an average rating and I can’t seem to figure out why.

Anyhoo, just looking for some insight.

Well, you really have to compare the review pics to the prototype pics.

            Prototype: http://akibahobby.net/2009/08/orchidseed_seena_color_sample.html

Compare this pic http://akibahobby-c2.sakura.ne.jp/2009/08/10/s002.jpg to this pic http://foobarweb.sakura.ne.jp/images-figure/2009/f_orchid_seena/large/b01.jpg

If you compare the pics you’ll notice her clothes aren’t as dark and the ends of her hair aren’t as sharp and defined. The colors look dimmed out. I think her hair could have looked a lot better.

            • Aka #
              6

I think that’s a lot due to lighting like Rico said. Though the sharpness of her hair is more obvious now that you point it out. I still don’t see it as ‘bad’ yet though, or average like the ratings seem to be.

Sorry Rico, didn’t mean to steal your business! Everyone read Rico’s review first!!111oneone I just honestly couldn’t remember if you’d bought her or not, it’s hard enough remembering what I’m buying.

              • 7

LOL, I know what you mean. While my track record with figures is pretty good, there have been a couple times where I’ve walked out of a Best Buy or a Borders with a DVD/manga that I already owned. :P

              • Aka #
                8

It’s not often I’ve bought doubles of things… but I have the first DVD from Azumanga Daioh twice because I accidentally ordered 2 different versions, one that came with the box and one that didn’t. I’ve also bought a digital copy of a CD, then went to the store and bought a physical forgetting I bought the digital copy.

I don’t buy enough physical merch though to do it too often. Figures are the most I’ve spent on anime ever, they feel more worth it than DVDs do due to prices.

        • 9

          Stop steelin mah busines, Aka!!!!11oneone

Look forward to two posts then cause I’ve got Seena ordered as well – not really sure when she’s coming in, LOL.

Anyway Ami, have you seen Orchid Seed’s Gothic Punk Mikuru? That one turned out quite nice IMO. Changed my opinion of them for the better. Still wouldn’t say they’re as good as Alter/Max Factory (few are) but they’re solid.

          • Ami #
            10

I LOVE that Mikuru. I think I fell in love after seeing your pictures now that I think of it. ^^; If Orchid Seed made all of their figures look this good than I wouldn’t have any doubts buying their products. Their Lancer figure came out very nice too. http://myfigurecollection.net/figure/12156_lancer

I’m really hoping their Lineage Elf Mage comes out nice. I don’t want to pass on her! I think I’ll get Seena now. I really do love her pose. I know I’m going to regret it if I pass on her. If worse comes to worse I’ll just sell her. :)

Yes, they need to do a Xecty figure to go with Elwing. I think she should be upside down to match the artwork :D

    “I haven’t seen School Days

    Fix this now!!!

“Kotobukiya is set to release another figure from the ultra-bright, cheery, and happy anime School Days.”

The way you put that, it almost sounds like you have seen it and you’re just messing with those of us who also have… :)

    • 14

Oh I haven’t seen School Days, but I know the basic premise. I also had it spoiled for me (thanks, Momo-chan!) but I’m not bitter. :P

Regarding Minato, I totally agree with you, haha. I also wish I could get the figure without all the extra crap but maybe I’m alone on that.

        Momo-chan is evil.

I decided to take a chance on the Elwyn figure, since I like Tony Taka’s designs. I was on the fence about it for the exact reasons you explained, and also because I don’t like larger scale figures because they don’t seem as detailed. Hopefully Koto will do the character justice; the protos look great, and if the final product lives up to the protos, I’ll be a happy customer.

Other than that, the Minato figure looks very nice. Any word on scale?

Also I felt Hatsukoi was a bit of a lousy series, but the Misaki figure looks very intriguing… The proto sculpt looks very nice, but the paint job looks to lack a lot of shading. I’ll probably give it a miss, but I may regret it later. Oh well. :P

    • 17

I was talking to the my friend who works at my local anime shop about Misaki. He really didn’t like the figure because it didn’t look like her. Her eyes were too big and she didn’t have that mischievous quality presented in the manga.

I countered with how good she looks cast-off, but that didn’t change his opinion.

Elwyn (is that how your supposed to write her name?) is a great looking figure, but time will tell on that one.

Oh, and my guess is Minato will be a 1/X scale. :P

I have to disagree with you again on your Kotobukiya love. Regarding your comment about how they do well with the colouring on their exclusives, recall my Aisaka Taiga figure. The promo shots were beautiful, she had wonderful colours and was adorable. Now contrast that with what I actually received, bland colouring with little shading. Still adorable, but lacking a lot of the punch the original promo shots presented.

Minato is a cute figure though, I’ve liked the artist who designed the character this figure is based off of for a while now, I believe it’s Ryohka but I could be mistaken. And of course, my usual boob comment, but I can look past that with her, assuming colouring were to be the same, she’s got a nice figure, cute bum, nice hair and face.

Kagura looks a bit too plain to me to be $67 USD. Osaka looks cute and was probably closer to a price I’d accept, but I just feel they’re too simple looking for a price that high. Though with the inflated prices in the figure industry, perhaps it’s just normal.

Milestone seems to have done some interesting figures. The Spider Girl for instance, or Cyrile from Shining Force EXA. But I’d ve very wary of their quality, just due to not having heard of them really at all. I saw an interesting review of the Spider Girl though.

I’m not a fan of Hatsukoi Limited, I’ve seen a bit of the anime, read a bit of the manga but nothing really stood out. I’ve read some of the authors other works though such as Ichigo 100% and Akane-chan Over Drive, but never finished either I don’t think. Misaki seems like a cute figure though.

    Nendoroid Tsumugi, skip.

Sekai Saionji, I’d like to buy a figure of her, but I’m not sure I’ll buy this one. She was my favourite from the series, so I sorta want one of her, but not enough to spend $80 on this. I’ll wait until she’s in the bargin bin where I think she’ll end up unfortunately (though fortunately for me).

Also, lol @ bright, cheery, and happy anime School Days… If you don’t already know, please watch it, ASAP.

Elwing… Pre-ordered her already as well. Despite the heafty price tag. You sorta contradict yourself though, up top you praise Kotobukiya for their colouring (though in relation to exclusives), then criticize them for the opposite (though in relation to standard release). Ignoring that little conflict of opinion, I really really hope they get her right. If the 1/6th scale Eva figures are anything to go by, they will. Though, we can recall that Asuka’s skin tone was perhaps too pale (or Rei’s not pale enough?) so I could see the skin colour off by a tone, but hopefully all will be good.

I certainly hope they make a Xecty figure to go with this beauty, though, will she be upside down to match the drawing? That would be a first as far as I’m concerned. I’d still buy though perhaps hope for a way to mount her both upright and upside down.

    I think I was a little talkitive today…

    -Aka

PS: I’ll bet this gets caught by a spam filter lol

    • 19

You post the longest comments dude…

and don’t ever change it! :D

LOL. You say I love Kotobukiya and unstable robot thought I had beef with them. I like Kotobukiya just fine, but I wouldn’t say I love them like I love Max Factory & Alter. Their sculpts are usually OK but they have some major issues with color consistency. Sometimes it’s an “in house” color scheme that’s muted/tinted and sometimes they just cut corners in production but it afflicts a good number of their sculpts. The biggest problem of it all is that it’s usually only obvious when their products start hitting the market – they do a great job photopshoping to hidden coloring problems – so it’s hard to tell until it’s too late. From my perspective it feels like I rarely go a post without warning of that very problem above so I wonder how I come off “loving” them like that (maybe I’m subconsciously over-compensating as not to be needlessly harsh on them).

Anyway, on to your actual comments.

I did forget about your review of Taiga, sorry. >,< Though as I recall the overall color was still nice but what she was lacking was any depth/shading to her skin, right? While you’re right that that’s not “good” (and certainly not comparable to Alter/GSC’s basic standards) it’s at least an improvement for Kotobukiya.

I got the basic “Kotobukiya exclusives = good” from Jem. I figure since she gets so many of them then she would know best and the few I’ve seen her get did look quite nice. I’ve never had a Kotobukiya exclusive for myself though (but that will soon change because Mikoto just shipped from Tokyo Hunter!).

Kagura is plain, but that’s not going to stop me. I just picked up Yen Press’s omnibus re-release of the manga (thank you for making Yukari an English teacher this time Yen!) so I freely admit that I’m riding high on a wave of nostalgia with the Azumanga Daioh! figures.

Thanks for that link. If Spider Girl is representative of Milestone’s usual quality then Misaki could be nice as well.

*Checks post* I don’t see how I contradict myself. I say I dig Minato’s coloring and that Elwing’s coloring looks to be warm and have good shading. The only thing I don’t do with Minato is add the caveat about Kotobukiya’s coloring problems like I did with Elwing. So I believe, good friend, that it’s better to say I was being inattentive to my post’s basic theme. :D I should have made reference to that for Minato (and all the other two as well) but I was being lazy. :P

The thing about Kotobukiya’s 1/6 Asuka though is that it feels like her pale tones were intentional. The coloring in her plug-suit is pretty vibrant and it’s not that her skin is a bad color, it’s just pale by comparison. So I think we’re good to assume that the Eva figures (and other 1/6 figures as Ami pointed out) are a good measure to go by.

But if she ends up being closer to 1/5, like the early reports suggested, then the only thing I can think to go by is Chizuru. Then we’re screwed, LOL.

I could be wrong but I don’t think that level innovation – to be able to display a figure both downside up and upside down – is really Kotobukiya’s style. We’ll probably get one or the other.

PS. My spam filter likes you (except that one time). Yours, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to like me, LOL.

      • Aka #

I suppose it’s just a matter of perspective. I’ve got a mild dislike for them, so anytime you praise them I probably think something along the lines of “Why does he like Kotobukiya so much, they fail so hard” where as others may like Kotobukiya, and when you say their paint schemes tend to be subdued and tinted they think “What’s he got against Kotobukiya?”

Taiga’s biggest failure that I see today is the different in her hair. If you look at the promo shot, she’s got wonderful hair, but if you look at what I received, it’s just brown, a simple, flat, brown.

Having owned only one Kotobukiya exclusive though I’m very limited on data points, so I can’t really predict a trend based off a single point of data. Jem having more points of data than I, she would definitely know better than I. I’ll have to read Jems site more.

It wasn’t that Kagura was plain, I think she’s pretty good at representing her character and design, just that the price didn’t reflect this. I should read the manga at some point. Own the anime though.

I hope Spider Girl is representative of Milestone because she’s not bad, has some cute molding in her face.. and a spider where a spider shouldn’t be. But ignoring that… I think the figure is cool. I keep thinking about buying her.

Well the way I read it, you praise them for colour at the top in Minato’s post. Then you praise the prototype for Elwing but point out Kotobukiya’s often not good with colour. In Minato you seem to give the impression that their colour is great, then later say the opposite and that they’re not consistant. So I felt it was a bit two-minded. But I suspect I do the same thing as well on my site.

Lets hope we don’t get a 1/5th scale Elwing then. I would like for her to turn out well.

One thing I’ll bring up though, GSC, my favourite company so far, even they aren’t always consistant with things. Recently saw pictures of Black Rock Shooter and was disappointed at some of the detail lacking. And she’s been delayed soooo much, they still didn’t get it right?

You’re probably right about Kotobukiya, they’re not really innovative like that. But it was more an off hand comment as I looked at the picture they’re designed after.

Oh, I hope you like your Mikoto. I find it a pleasant figure overall, I kind of want to buy her. But not for an exclusive price and not so shortly after Taiga. But from the pictures I’ve seen she looks pretty good though I haven’t done the comparison between “What I expected” and “What I got”.

        • 21

True. Maybe I should come up with a ranking or something and post it on my about page. Speaking of, it’s high time I updated that, LOL.

You should read more Jem – it’s a fun blog. I even sometimes learn a few things when I read her posts (like her one about the nature of exclusives and limited figures). It’s sure to be a refreshing change from my nonsensical ramblings for sure. :D

Agree about the quality of Spider Girl, but disagree on wanting to own her. The spider where a spider shouldn’t be is enough to turn me off to it. :P

Hmm. I see where you’re coming from now. I’ll try to do a better job proofing my nonsensical ramblings in the future.

Ah crap, are you serious? That’s what we’re getting after all the delays? Ugh. I mean it’s not the end of the world – I’m still excited as hell to have her on order – but that scar is so cartoonish now that it’s laughable.

I hope I like my Mikoto too, LOL. I’ve been trying to stay away from images of the released figure so I don’t spoil myself, but it’s not looking like she’s 100% faithful to the prototype. :/

          • Aka #
            22

I’m terrible at ranking things when they get close. Like when people ask me “What are your top 10 favourite anime?” well they’re all favourites, so how do I rank them?! I want them all to be #1!

I’ll take a look for Jem’s post on exclusives and limited figures. I’d like to hear some opinions on that, I think yours and mine tend to be “Hate, death, die, fail so hard!”.

Spider Girl, I’m not necessarily a fan of the spider, but it’s unique and just like “Razor Cock” would get more of a rise out of people than your average figure. Though both due have the issue of also giving the wrong impression.

I’m glad you were able to spot the scar’s failure. There were some people I was talking to who couldn’t seem to find any issue. I thought it was the most obvious thing ever… And yeah, all those delays for that? Personally, I hate scars, so the fact it’s there already annoyed me. But now it feels like they’ve taken something away from me so I want it back even if I didn’t want it in the first place. Strange lol.

I honestly haven’t noticed any differences in Mikoto between release and prototype, so I look forward to your review, hopefully making me feel better for not ordering her lol (though probably the opposite).

    re: Azumanga Daioh sculpting

I think it’s an attempt to be faithful to the original designs. i.e. not adding detail where there wasn’t any.

I’m still not sure how successful they are though, because I have felt on all of them there is something off about the hair/head.

I’m glad manufacturers are revisiting older series. It gives me hope for other series that don’t have have good pvc figures as well xD

Exclusive figures and their exclusivity, and matching price tags is starting to cheese me off.

In the (not so new) news for me would be Yamato’s Amanda from Blassreiter 8D. Though again, she’s very expensive D8

I definitely see where you’re coming from with Sakaki-san and Kagura, but I thought Osaka was pretty accurate as far as face/hair went. What looked off about her?

‘Grats on the Amanda grab! I saw that figure and thought there was something a bit off about the proportions, but that was the only thing I noticed. Cool that you’re getting her regardless. :D

Stay the hell away from School Days. Trust me. You will thank me later. I am tempted to still pick up both Sekai and Kotonoha because it makes complete sense to display them and I really liked Kotonoha. As for mischievous, she is pretty daring and bad in all sense of the word. I can’t remember another anime that was able to evoke such strong feelings of rage.

I preordered Minato because everything about the figure was very cute and well-done. It’s a pretty good price to get a figure, mouse and other “fun” stuff, but I wouldn’t pay more than $110 for her.

Oh, so then I was kinda close in her characterization. Neat. And thanks for the warning, but I still fully intend to watch School Days on of these days. Right after I finish watching Haruhi S2. :D

I ended up busting the deadline on Minato so my decision was pretty much made for me, lol. I feel like I’m going to regret that. >,<
